Abstract

This study was performed to compare the anticarious effect of the different flouride agents( 2% NaF, 1.9% NH4F, 1.23% APF, 1.6% TiF4 ) on artificial caries lesion. Enamel slabs were topically treated with fluorides for 5 minutes and mounted on palatal area of acrylic maxillary appliance. Enamel slabs were placed intraorally for 21 days. For analysis of remineralization effect, fluoride uptake, enamel solubility, and surface hardness were measured and the changes of enamel surface were observed with scanning electron microscope.
The results were as follows.
1. Fluoride uptake of APF group was significantly higher than that of others except TiF4 group. NH4F group was relatively higher in fluoride uptake than NaF group.
2. Fluorides were significantly effective on reducing of enamel solubility. TiF4, APF were relatively more effective than others on enhancing acid resistance .
3. Fluorides had the same effect on enhancing of surface microhardness. But APF, TiF4 were relatively more effective than others on surface hardening.
4. APF caused the -granular surface deposits, but these were almost disappeared after intraoral wearing. TiF4 produced the amorphous surface coatings on enamel surfaces, and these were partially remained after intraoral wearing for 21 days.

These results suggested that TiF4 was effective on fluoride uptake, acid resistance, surface hardening by producing the amorphous surface coating, and NH4F was same or more effective than NaF. TiF4, NH4F were recommended as the effective topical fluoride agents to prevent caries.
